Two New Concepts to Meet the Needs of GLOBALG.A.P. Producers

Parallel Production

ParallelProduction

Before IFA Version 4 came into effect in March 2011, producers were unable to exclude parts of their production processes from certification. This didn't mean that all the processes had to be certified, but the General Regulations did not permit producers to produce the same product partly in a certified and partly in a non-certified process. In this regard, producers were left with only one choice: either certifiy all processes or none.

Producer

A person (individual) or business (individual or producer group) who is legally responsible for the production of the product relevant to the scope, and who has the legal responsibility for the products sold by that farming business.

Question 1-1-1

We quite often say that a product is GLOBALG.A.P. certified. But why is this statement in fact not 100% correct? Before you click on 'show solution', please take a moment to think about it.

Consequently, the certification process takes into account each and every production unit as soon as it was used to produce the product whose name shall finally appear on the GLOBALG.A.P. Certificate.

This regulation was unfavorable to producers who sold parts of their products to customers that didn't require GLOBALG.A.P. Certification. Especially those producers that operated different sites to accommodate different markets felt disadvantaged, as they had to face high certification costs on the one hand, while not receiving any market recognition on the other.

To meet the needs of these producers, GLOBALG.A.P. has developed the Parallel Production Concept, which now permits producers to produce the same product partly in a certified and partly in a non-certified production process.

Parallel Production

A case in which a producer produces the same product partly in a GLOBALG.A.P. certified production process and partly in a non-certified one. The Parallel Producer then owns both certified and non-certified products.

Question 1-1-3
A producer with a GLOBALG.A.P. certificate for soya wants to expand the production to also accommodate the North American market. Up to now the producer has only produced soya for the European market and so was prohibited from using genetically modified organisms. Does this farmer become a Parallel Soya Producer if he starts producing soya in a production process partly with GMOs and partly without?
No.
Yes.
